The Washington Monument and the Liberty Flame: A Spiritual Focal Point in the Nation’s Capital
The Washington Monument stands at the heart of the nation’s capital as one of the most recognized symbols of America. Rising above the National Mall, it honors George Washington, the first president of the United States and a central figure in the founding of the Republic.
Its simple form, strength, and height make it a powerful visual reminder of leadership, purpose, and the ideals upon which the nation was founded. Yet in the teachings of the Ascended Masters, the Washington Monument carries an even deeper spiritual meaning.
It is connected with the liberty flame.
A Monument to Leadership and National Purpose
The Washington Monument was built to honor George Washington and the founding spirit of America. Its upward-reaching form points the eye toward heaven, suggesting aspiration, remembrance, and the responsibility of a nation under God.
Positioned along the National Mall, the monument stands as part of the symbolic landscape of Washington, D.C. It is surrounded by other national landmarks that speak to government, sacrifice, freedom, and the destiny of America.
But for students of the Ascended Masters, the monument is not only a historical landmark. It is also a spiritual focal point.
The Transfer of the Liberty Flame
In a dictation delivered in Washington, D.C. on September 30, 1962, the ascended master K-17 announced the transfer of a spiritual gift from France to America.
According to this teaching, through the decision of Paul the Venetian, the full pulsation of the liberty flame was transferred from his retreat in France and permanently placed within the forcefield of the Washington Monument.
This teaching gives the monument a profound spiritual significance. The liberty flame was not merely an idea or a symbol. It was described as a living spiritual presence anchored within the forcefield of the monument for the blessing of America and the world.
From Outer Symbol to Inner Flame
The Statue of Liberty was given to America by France as an outer symbol of friendship and freedom. But the transfer of the liberty flame to the Washington Monument represents something deeper: the movement from outer symbol to inner spiritual reality.
The liberty flame is a flame of divine freedom. It is connected with the higher destiny of America and the responsibility of freedom-loving souls to uphold liberty, justice, and divine purpose.
The Washington Monument, then, becomes more than a memorial to the past. It becomes a reminder of a living flame that must be guarded, invoked, and expressed in the hearts of the people.
The Threefold Flame in the Washington Monument
The Washington Monument is not only a memorial to George Washington. In the teachings of the Ascended Masters, it is also connected with a focus of the threefold flame, also called the Liberty Flame.
In a dictation given on September 30, 1962, the Ascended Master K-17 announced that a decision had been made at Chananda’s retreat in India. Through the decision of beloved Paul the Venetian, the full pulsation of the great Liberty Flame was transferred from Paul the Venetian’s retreat in France and permanently placed within the forcefield of the Washington Monument.
This Liberty Flame was described as a gift from the heart of France, from the spiritual government of France to the spiritual government of America. It was given to grace the heart of America.
The teaching explains that the Liberty Flame would penetrate the structure of the monument and rise high into the atmosphere above it. All who visit there may be infused by the pulsations of the Liberty Flame within the heart of America, even without knowing it.
This gives the Washington Monument a profound spiritual meaning. It stands not only as an outer symbol of national memory, but as a spiritual focus where the flame of liberty and the threefold flame are anchored for America and the world.
A Pillar of Liberty in Washington, D.C.
The Washington Monument rises like a pillar in the nation’s capital. In its form, we can see the symbolism of a vertical connection between heaven and earth — a reminder that true freedom must be anchored in divine law.
Freedom cannot be sustained by outer institutions alone. It must live within the hearts of the people.
The teachings remind us that liberty is a spiritual responsibility. It requires courage, discipline, sacrifice, and alignment with the will of God. When freedom is used according to divine law, it becomes a blessing. When freedom is misused, it must be purified and restored through prayer, decree, and the violet flame.
The Responsibility of the Nation’s Capital
For the Washington, D.C. Community Teaching Center, this teaching is especially meaningful.
The liberty flame was anchored in the very city where the nation’s government is centered. Washington, D.C. is not only a political capital. It is a place of spiritual responsibility, where students of light can pray and decree for God-government, divine justice, and the protection of freedom.
To recognize the Washington Monument as a focal point of the liberty flame is to remember that the work of freedom is ongoing. Each generation must choose whether it will uphold the flame or allow it to grow dim.
